Look Ma' No Brakes

We tried to push the bike, and the front caliper was frozen shut. The leavers were mushy, and bleeding produced nothing. Again, years of storage caused problems. The brake fluid was a nice goo. Here is a the front caliper. It took an hour of soaking to remove the piston.

Identification

Well the side badge said DT 400. The title said RD400. And the after market manual was for an XS400.

When I tried starting the bike. . .

gas was running our the air-intakes. Broken down I can see why. The floats were stuck, and it looks like there was years of gas setting in the bowls.

Teardown

After trying to start the bike and failing, it was time to start tearing it down.

Day One

I have been looking for a bike to rebuild for about a year.  I recently acquired a complete 1978 Yamaha xs400 with less than 7000 original miles. This blog is my journey to rebuild.  I have no desire to keep it all original or create a cafe racer.  I just want a fun bike to ride around town.  Something different that my 1100cc cruiser.
